A(lfred) E(dward) Housman wurde am 26 März 1859 in Worcestershire, England, geboren. Der Tod seiner Mutter in seinem zwölften Lebensjahr hatte ihn sehr erschüttert. Housman lebte ein ruhiges, zurückgezogenes Leben als Gelehrter. Zu seinen Lebzeiten veröffentlichte er nur zwei Gedichtbände: Shropshire Lad und Last Poems. Housman starb am 30 April 1936 in Cambridge.
Eine Sammlung namens More Poems wurde von seinem Bruder Laurence Housman posthum herausgegeben. Lyrisch, fast epigrammatisch in ihrer Form, rufen seine Gedichte wehmütig die Schicksale und Enttäuschungen seiner Jugendzeit auf dem englischen Land in Erinnerung. Ihre Einfachheit und Klarheit, sowie die unverwechselbare Bildsprache hat den allgemeinen Kunstgeschmack im England des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts sowohl vor als auch nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg stark geprägt.
Durch ihre spezifische Liedsprache wurden die Gedichte eng mit dieser Ära und mit Shropshire selbst verbunden.
Housman war einer der bedeutendsten klassischen Gelehrten seiner Zeit. Er etablierte seinen Ruf als Privatwissenschaftler und wurde aufgrund seiner Qualitäten zum Professor für Latein am University College London und anschließend an der University of Cambridge ernannt. Seine Ausgaben von Juvenal, Manilius und Lucan gelten noch heute  als vorbildlich.

A(lfred) E(dward) Housman was born on March 26, 1859 in Worcestershire, England. At the age of twelve the death of his mother  had very much shaken him. Housman lived a quiet, withdrawn life as a scholar. During his lifetime, he only published two volumes of poetry: Shropshire Lad and Last Poems. Housman died on April 30, 1936 in Cambridge.
A  collection called More Poems was posthumously published by his brother Laurence Housman. Lyrical, almost epigramatic in form, his poems wistfully recall the fates and disappointments of his youth in the English countryside. Their simplicity and clarity, as well as the unmistakable visual language strongly influenced the general taste of art in the England of the early 20th century both before and after the First World War.
Through their specific songlike language, the poems were closely associated with this era and with Shropshire itself.
Housman was one of the most important classical scholars of his time. He established his reputation as a private scientist and was appointed professor of Latin at University College London and afterwards at the University of Cambridge because of his qualities. His editions of Juvenal, Manilius and Lucan are still considered exemplary today.
